Chelsea Success - "As Nature Intended"
Jamie Dunstan's garden has won a Silver Gilt medal at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. Six months ago, Dave Root of Kelways asked us if we'd be interested in growing barley for Chelsea. Since agreeing, Barters have been 'secretly' growing a crop of barley which was to form the bulk of the planting. The garden was sponsored by a drilling company (Stockton Drilling) and a brewery (Woldtop Brewery), hence the barley.
Jamie grew another crop of barley in Yorkshire as a back up, but in the end, the Wiltshire crop was the more suitable. The plan was for the barley to be in flower for Chelsea, but the lack of warmth this spring means that it will probably flower fully after the show's over.
Apple Grafting
There has recently been an upsurge in interest in apple-growing generally, but in Wiltshire and Somerset varieties in particular. This has been in part due to the Marlborough Apple Days which have been held in the town for several years. Barters is blessed with having Nick Curzon who has worked for Barters for over 30 years and is gifted at all forms of propagation, including grafting.
